While AI promises unprecedented capabilities, it also comes with significant computational demands. Think of it as your GPS promising a quicker route but not accounting for how much fuel you’d be burning along the way. Training a single advanced AI model can require the equivalent of 175,000 kWh of electricity, about the same as the annual consumption of 15 U.S. households. This isn’t just an environmental concern, it’s a financial one.

Consider the case of a global tech company that deploys an AI-driven customer support system. At first, it seems like a smart cost-saving measure, but soon the rising cloud service costs start to pile up. What was initially a cost-saving measure turns into a financial burden. This highlights the importance of evaluating the total cost of ownership when deploying AI at scale.
